Mental Health and Horses

Horses are very sensitive and have developed an acute awareness of their surroundings having been preyed upon in their natural environment over time.

A horse responds best to calmness and kindness. People who live with sensory, depression or anxiety, past trauma, behavioural or other mental health issues learn to regulate their emotions and mood while being close to horses. They become aware of their body and thoughts. This self-awareness and mindfulness is relaxing and allows the best response from the horse. These skills are transferred to other life situations. Therapeutic Riding (5 years plus with mild disabilities)

Individuals with mild disabilities can experience riding in a safe friendly environment. Development and learning are incorporated into each session through play.

Play

Through the individual's interaction with the horse, development of riding skills and playing games the individual will develop fine and gross motor skills, perceptual skills, process and intergrate sensory information and show improvements in their physical functioning, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

When riding the horse, the individual needs to maintain an upright posture to ensure that they are balanced, and they learn where their body is in space. They need to give the horse directions by using their hands, seat, shoulders and legs simultaneously. By doing this they improve their coordination and communication skills.  They also need to build a trusting relationship by remaining calm and relaxed. This helps to regulate their emotions and with their relationship skills.

Because the horse is non-judgmental the individual will get an instant response from the horse when the correct commands are given building self-confidence and giving a sense of control.

Horses need to be cared for and rely on people for food, shelter, safety and their health. By working with horses, you gain a sense of purpose, responsibility, self-worth and confidence. Being outdoors and with others is also beneficial. The natural world and socialisation helps boost your happiness and wellbeing. Read more (What we do)
