Therapeutic Riding Individual sessions
Occupational Therapy Principles and Techniques are used during the sessions. A riding assessment will be carried out with the individual. Their family are included when required. Here session goals will set. The individual's goals are the focus of each Therapy session. The aim is to make improvements in the ability of the individual to carry out their everyday occupations. The techniques and movements used during the session will incorporate Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding methods to best suit the individuals needs.
Hippotherapy "Hippos", meaning horse in Greek, is the medical application of the horse in therapy. It is commonly used around the world by health professionals with the relevant training ensuring that it is practiced safely and competently. The movement pattern of the horse simulates that of the human gait. Its this unique multi-dimensional, variable, rhythmic and repetitive action that directly influences the individual sitting astride, who in turn passively responds to and interacts with this movement.
Hippotherapy is a medically based treatment tool, whereas Therapeutic Riding involves teaching people with disabilities equestrian skills.
Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding naturally provides an integrated, multi-sensory experience and can also be modified to enhance or decrease certain types of sensory stimulation.
Carefully graded motor and sensory input is provided to achieve occupational based therapy goals for individuals with neuro-motor, sensory/functional limitations and developmental learning difficulties.
The movement of the horse provides strong sensory input in the context of a meaningful and enjoyable activity. The sessions also improve personal confidence, self-esteem, communication and interpersonal skills and trust. (Refer Benefits page)
Sessions can include catching the horse, grooming, tacking up, riding, ground work/trust building, horse management and more.
The session consists of lead rein riding and learning to groom, tack/untack the horse and horse care and teach the rider how to ride and care for a horse safely.
